Wednesday, March 20th

9:00 AM – 10:15 AM Session 1 Legislative Advocacy – Connecting with your Elected Officials
Moderator – Sandra Cochrane, Assistant Dean WMed Innovation Center
Advocacy is an important tool that you can use to help elected officials understand your program, how it benefits your community, and how legislators can get involved in entrepreneurial support. Session participants will explore various advocacy methods and impactful ways to engage with elected officials at the state and local levels.

10:30 AM – 11:45 AM Session 2 Innovation Hubs
Moderator – Tom Hopper, Associate Director for Business Development, Grand Valley State University, Muskegon Innovation Hub
So, what is an innovation hub anyway? Is it just a trendy term replacing “incubators”, “R&D labs”, “science parks”, “technopoles”, or “training facilities” that have recently fallen from grace? Is there anything special and new about Innovation Hubs? This session will feature discussion of the unique characteristics of Innovation Hubs and how to foster the development of an Innovation Hub in your community.

12:00 PM – 1:00 PM Lunch and MBIA Member Meeting
After lunch is served, MBIA will hold its Annual Member Meeting. During this meeting, ballots will be provided for those who have not previously voted via email. The by-laws require that the board consist of 7 board members, 4 of whom are officers. A quorum of 50% of the general membership is required for a valid election, so please make it a priority to vote.
1:15 PM – 2:30 PM Session 3 “[IN] on the Road” - Fostering your Entrepreneurship Center’s Role in your Community – Building Local Talent through Meaningful Engagements
Moderators – Paula Nas and David Merot, University of Michigan-Flint Office of Outreach
Studies and experience show that creating opportunities for more inclusive entrepreneurship can help foster economic growth and strengthen our communities. What can we do as innovation centers to become more inclusive? How do you partner with local grassroots organizations? What are the best ways to adapt your services to the needs of the local community? Please come prepared to share your best practices and lessons learned.

Accelerator programs are all the rage lately, but what exactly is an accelerator program and how do you create one? Join in the conversation to discover traits of successful accelerator programs, various types of accelerator programs, and steps in developing an accelerator program.
